Cultural change can be painstakingly slow. We are working to create a safe and inclusive campus. ![]() ![]() As your faculty, we pledge to acknowledge and confront instances of racism and hate that affect members of our campus community. Racism, unfortunately, pervades our culture and social institutions, as we have seen most recently with the racist violence in Charlottesville and the national conversation about DACA. Racism and prejudice are antithetical to our values as academics and teachers, and the most recent instance of racism at our institution necessitates that we reaffirm our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and respect for all both broadly and specifically to you, our students. As teachers and scholars, we strive to uphold the university mission to engage “students as learners and leaders in an intellectually challenging, culturally enriched, and contemporarily diverse environment.” The student-organized meeting on September 6th in response to a racist social media post by an IUP student was an incredible example of your leadership in making IUP a safe, respectful, and welcoming learning environment. ![]()
